Don’t be fooled! All highlights, the life and buzz of central Cologne are within walking distance. Walk a few hundred metres towards the Rhine to enjoy sweet temptations at the Chocolate Museum, or only a bit further towards Hohenzollern Bridge and you will literally bump into the imposing Cologne Cathedral. For a price of 2,000 talers, the London-based engineer John Moore is awarded the contract for the design of a water tower. His initial proposal foresees a capacity of 15,460 cubic metres to supply 170,000 inhabitants with water.

Start of the construction works. Although the capacity is reduced to 3,650 cubic metres of water, the water tank at a height of 25 metres is still the largest flat-bottomed tank in Germany. It is also the first tank in Germany to receive a double tank (i.e. an inner and an outer, concentric tank).

1872

The tower is inaugurated as Europe’s highest water tower with a height of 35 metres. The design elements combine Rhenish Romanesque with Classicism. Until 1930, the tower serves as Cologne’s primary source of drinking water.

1942

During World War II, the water tower suffers severe damage. During a bomb attack, it is reduced to a height of 27 metres. The building remains an unused ruin for years after the war.

1985

Investors plan to convert the water tower into a luxury hotel. The architect Konrad L. Heinrich starts rebuilding the tower under consideration of all requirements for the preservation of architectural monuments, such as the restoration of the roof arcades and adherence to the strict tectonic form.

1990

Cologne’s most exceptional hotel building is finished. The water tower is now home to a 5-star Superior luxury hotel with 88 guest rooms, 7 meeting rooms and a gourmet restaurant.

1999

The Wasserturm welcomes very famous guests: The Rolling Stones spend the night before their show. Over the years, many more international stars check in to the hotel.

2019

The GCH Hotel Group takes over the management of the hotel now called “Hotel im Wasserturm Köln”.  The hotel becomes a highly popular wedding and event location.

2021

Re-branded under the Curio Collection by Hilton, Cologne’s newest hot spot, the Wasserturm Hotel Cologne opens its doors. 88 uniquely designed hotel rooms overlooking the city, a luxurious spa, a conservatory and plenty of event spaces await you with original discoveries at every turn.
